Phishing

« Back to Glossary Index

Phishing is a social engineering attack where attackers deceive potential victims into revealing personal information or clicking on malicious links.

Common Phishing Attacks:

Example:

Damian receives an email claiming that they’ve won a $1,000 gift card. The email prompts him to click on a provided link to claim his prize. Once Damian clicks the link, he is redirected to a website that prompts him for his name, address, and credit card information. Damian fills in this information, which is then sent to the attacker thus putting him at risk of identity theft and financial fraud.

Prevention Tips:

  • Enable spam filters to automatically filter out suspicious emails.
  • Don’t click on links or attachments in suspicious emails.
  • Avoid sharing personal information online.
