Ransomware

« Back to Glossary Index

Ransomware is a type of cybersecurity attack where a victim’s files are encrypted and a payment is demanded to decrypt them. Attackers often gain access to a system through social engineering tactics like phishing emails or malicious attachments.

Example:

Karen receives an email containing a seemingly harmless attachment from an unknown sender. Curious, she opens the attachment, triggering the installation of ransomware on her computer. Suddenly, a message appears on her screen, stating that her files have been encrypted and demanding payment in Bitcoin to decrypt them.

Prevention Tips:

  • Educate yourself about common social engineering tactics and how to identify suspicious emails or attachments.
  • Regularly back up your data to a secure location.
  • Implement security measures like firewalls and antivirus software.
