Scareware

« Back to Glossary Index

Scareware is deceptive software that claims to detect fake threats to pressure users into purchasing unnecessary security solutions.

Example:

While browsing the internet, James encounters a pop-up warning of a virus infection on his computer. The pop-up prompts him to download antivirus software from a linked source. John complies and unknowingly installs more malicious software instead.

Prevention Tips:

  • Be cautious of unsolicited security warnings or popups.
  • Don’t download software from untrusted sources.
  • Use reputable antivirus and anti-malware software.
